Samsung presents the new Galaxy Note Edge

Samsung have just announced a new device to the Note family which brings a unique two-sided display, the Galaxy Note Edge.

The Galaxy Note Edge looks a lot like a Note phone, but it has a bent edge that features an app icon tray that appears on that bent edge rather than across the bottom of the screen as it does on previous Samsung Devices. The Galaxy Note Edge is based on the Galaxy Note 4 which is no surprise as both devices were presented by Samsung at the same time so both devices are very similar internally, it’s the screen that makes all the difference. The Note Edge uses a 5.6-inch AMOLED display that retains the ultra-high resolution of the Note 4 but the fold on the side adds an extra 160 pixels giving a total resolution of 1,600 x 2,560.

With the phone locked, Samsung uses the edge to display a clock the curved side and Quick Glance info with notifications. When you wake the screen, the side displays various features, including timer and flashlight icon and even a ruler.  When the device is unlocked we can keep shortcuts on the side for easy access or you can use it to enhance multitasking by switching between several screens. Even switching between the pages of the homescreen or the app drawer is also even easier with this curve.

Samsung will release an API to enable third-party apps to take advantage of the potential of the curved side as well and if you are thinking that it might be a problem whilst holding it with so many apps on the side you don’t have to worry as Samsung has added enough smarts to the curved side that accidental touches to it are not a problem.

Samsung has also added an Edge manager app which we consider key as it allows you to customize all the mentioned tweaks.

TouchWiz has also seen big improvements such as a modified version of the multi-window capabilities. Using the S Pen, you can minimize individual apps as much as you like to move them around the screen while you play around with other applications. The old multi-window feature just allows you to split the screen between two apps.

Both devices (Note 4, Edge) support more S Pen pressure sensitivity levels than before 2,048, up from 1,024. The design like the Galaxy S5 includes a fingerprint sensor and a heart rate monitor. The Note 4 and Note Edge also picks up a UV sensor on the back.

As we’ve mentioned the Note Edge’s specs is the same as the Note 4′s, which means both devices feature a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805, 3GB of RAM and a 64GB option in addition to a 32GB version, a 16MP camera, the S Pen and an SD card slot, though it has a smaller 3000 mAh battery and the USB port moves back to version 2.0.
