Google and Facebook will build the fastest submarine cable between Los Angeles and Hong Kong

The two Internet giants expects its launch by 2018. It will have an approximate cost of $400 million.

Google and Facebook have joined forces to build a submarine cable of 120 terabits per second (Tbps). A 12,800 kilometer cable which will connect Los Angeles to Hong Kong and become the fastest in the Pacific Ocean.

“Google’s mission is to connect people and information in the world, providing fast and reliable infrastructure,” says the Internet king in a blog, which announces that with the company of Mark Zuckerberg, they will “build the first system direct submarine cable between Los Angeles and Hong Kong with high capacity”.

The cable will cost approximately $400 million and intends to distribute its capacity in five fibre pairs. All those involved in investment, will have its own cable portion so they can have their own private traffic and maintain it.

The new submarine cable will become the sixth in which Google takes part. One of them, Faster, currently holds the record for the highest capacity and speed in the Pacific Ocean, but with the new plans of Google, the development of new cable which is scheduled to go into operation in 2018, Faster will take the second place.

Submarine cables are one of the most used ways to connect different parts of the world. Without going any further, last May, Facebook and Microsoft reached an agreement to deploy a new submarine using a fibre optic cable of next generation, called Marea, which will communicate Spain and the US from 2017. In addition, it will be managed and operated by a new subsidiary of Telefónica Telxius infrastructure.

This submarine cable will be 6,600 kilometers long connecting the United States, through the major hub connectivity in Northern Virginia, with Southern Europe. Specifically, Virginia Beach will join with Sopelana Vizcaya and then reach the Middle East.

Scientists and computer experts of Microsoft seeking ways to “solve” cancer

The idea of this program is not a cure, but to give oncologists tools to respond better to the disease and provide more effective treatments.

With laboratory test tubes, plastic cups and masks the offices of Microsoft have been very busy with what before was creaky keys and plastic cups dedicated to serve tea and coffee only. There are many differences between a lab and the Microsoft offices but a few days ago, workers claimed to be very close to being a laboratory.

And it’s not because they’re developing a new system, but because the computer giant has proposed themselves to “solve” cancer. Microsoft will allocate scientists and computer experts to end this disease. With this program, called Project Hanover, it is stated that Microsoft will not seek a vaccine or a new palliative care. They will simply try to provide better tools to those who truly seek a cure: oncologists.

In an article posted on its website, Microsoft has explained some details of this initiative. At the moment they have created multiple systems. Programs, in some cases to allow doctors to combat diseases and cells resistant to cancer. “Our research teams want to make progress in understanding the roles of genetics,” they say on their website.

The objective of this program is to give scientists better information in order to understand cancer and develop more personalised and effective treatments. Because of its computing capacity, Microsoft can accumulate a lot of information and therefore give advantage to doctors on the most devastating disease of our time.

Microsoft researchers say they have made great efforts to make their systems easy to use even for people without any qualification or interest in technology and computing.

Microsoft insist that the mission is not to cure cancer. The article published much emphasises the word “solve”. The idea of this program is not to find what doctors have been looking for, but to give weapons and artificial intelligence to respond to the needs of the disease.

Gamescom 2016: What to expect from the largest video game trade show in Europe

With the absence of conferences and shortage of news, the German showcase focuses on the players.

Virtual reality, perhaps more details on future consoles and, specially many many titles will be the main attractions for the next edition of the Gamescom trade fair, held from the 17th til the 21st in Cologne (Germany), the most important event for European video games.

Although distributors and main developers of the electronic entertainment industry devoted more attention to the Los Angeles event, E3, the German showcase has become a must for the latest developments in this sector that prepares the arrival of new platforms for the coming months sponsored by mainly the interest taken by the technology on virtual reality.

Apparently, this time with the absence of conferences, including Microsoft, have lowered expectations and an event with little news is expected. Most video games have already been presented previously.

However, numerous video games will come to light with the chance of playing multiple of them. Although, as we mentioned above, companies like Microsoft will not held their own conference presentation but definitely will be present with its catalogue of games and introducing “Gears of War 4”, the new instalment of the revolutionary shooter in third person who aspires to strengthen the sells for it’s XBOX in October.

They will be other proposals as “Forza Horizon 3” where driving will join this transverse vision of the company to allow the game from Windows 10 and Xbox One. “Recore” and “Sea of Thieves”, two unique games will also be available in the coming days. Sony, have the presence of “The Last Guardian”, “Horizon Zero Dawn” and “Gran Turismo Sport” in addition to the usual and staging PlayStation VR, their new virtual reality helmet which by the way will be filled with interesting games.

Ubisoft, meanwhile, will attend the European fair with individual somewhat anticipated games, “Watch Dogs 2” and “Ghost Recon Wildlands”, along with “South Park: the Fractured but whole”, inspired by the irreverent TV series, and even a projection of scenes featuring Assassin’s Creed. What about virtual reality? Businesses increasingly are joining this trend with various advertisements and it is expected that Ubisoft will unveil a project called “Star Trek: Bridge Crew.”

Another that adds to this long-awaited technology is Warner will the new trailer for “Batman Arkham VR” compatible with the PlayStation VR system which will arrive later this year, and that will allow players to get into the skin of the Dark Knight and explore the always dark Gotham. It will be available on October 4.

2K come with fresh material that will be released after the summer, “Mafia III” for example the new instalment in the saga of open world inspired by organised crime, or “NBA 2K17” possibly the best simulation of the sport to date. “WWE 2K17” or “Civilization VI” are other cartridges in their arsenal of games for this season.

Microsoft pays $10,000 to a woman whose computer crashed when installing Windows 10 automatically

“Nobody asked me if I wanted to upgrade,” says Teri Goldstein, owner of a travel agency in California, she decided to take the company to court “seeking compensation” for economic losses caused in her business.

Microsoft has not been successful with the campaign being carried out with Windows 10 with the aim that all users update to latest operating system the company is offering for the devices. Many users have described the installation as an “aggressive” strategy because even updates are carried out without permission.

For this reason, a woman has reported complaints to the company after Windows 10 was installed suddenly on her PC at work, completely blocking the computer. Microsoft has decided to compensate the “victim” with 10,000 dollars.

The protagonist of this curious story has a name: Teri Goldstein. “I had never heard of Windows 10”, says the newspaper. “Nobody asked me if I wanted to upgrade” she says. But the new operating system tried to settle days after Microsoft released Windows 10 in July 2015.

The update, however, failed. Teri Goldstein said her computer was locked so could not work for several days at the travel agency who she runs in Sausalito (California).

As customer service could not solve the problem, she decided to take Microsoft to court “seeking compensation” for economic losses caused in her business. This is how Teri Goldstein has won and has been indemnified.

Microsoft has decided not to appeal the sentence. Last month they paid the woman $10,000, and although denied irregularities in their practices, they say, according to “The Seatlle Times”, prefer to pay compensation instead of spending more money on an appeal.

Windows 10 was launched in July last year and its download is free until July 29, when the year of its launch is met.

Emoji direct quotation and voicemail prepare their arrival in WhatsApp

New details of the test version of the messaging application show some of the upcoming features that may arrive in a few weeks.

More and more improvements for WhatsApp. The process of introducing new features has accelerated in recent months. The last one proposed the possibility of sharing larger emojis and a new voicemail service.

New details from the trial version for mobile devices based on the iOS operating system advance the possible arrival of an interesting option that will allow users to choose between different sizes of these emoticons that have generated in recent years a new form of personal communication among young people.

There will be two sizes (small and large), according to leaks from the tests. Another new walking towards its entry into WhatsApp, the popular messaging application with over one billion users, is the ability to use voicemail, which will leave an audio message if a voice call fails to reach your contact.

In addition to these developments, WhatsApp plans to implement a system for direct quotes to a certain contact in group discussions an addition kind of Twitter style, just some weeks after the arrival of citing links and shared publications.

The Spam King sentenced to 30 months in prison

The creator of a message sent containing a link to click and referred to another web focused in getting appropriate access credentials of the accounts of the social network.

Sanford Wallac, the self-styled King of Spam, was sentenced on Monday to a two and a half years in prison in the US after he was convicted on charges of fraud by sending mass spam on Facebook, which compromised user accounts.

Wallace held a massive spam campaign between November 2008 and March 2009, which came to send up to 27 million messages through Facebook’s servers, as you can read on the website of the Department of Justice.

The message sent containing a link to click on it referred to another web, getting appropriate access credentials of Facebook accounts. He came to expose almost 500,000 accounts which also gave him the opportunity to extend the spam campaign.

Wallace pleaded guilty in August 2015. Then, prosecutors asked for a sentence of 36 months imprisonment, “underscore the importance of the seriousness of their actions and deterred from engaging in similar conduct again.” In the end, he has been sentenced to 30 months and must pay $310,629 in restitution.

The King of Spam was not new in sending spam in 2008. Earlier, in 1991, he had done the same by fax, and has been sued several times by companies like Facebook, AOL and MySpace, as explained Engadget .

Mark Zuckerberg, the “king” in the application market.

The CEO of Facebook dominates the world thanks to the “apps” WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and his own social network. All of them are the most downloaded in the world, followed by Snapchat.

Apple has already announced that next autumn they will change its strategy in the App Store. Numerous rumours suggest that Google will also carry out changes in the rules of the Play Store. It’s time to reinvent the smartphone App industry.

In the case of applications, the star player is well known: Mark Zuckerberg. The founder of Facebook is by far the king of downloads. As reported by “Business Insider” Facebook Messenger, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were the most downloaded apps of May in total, they staged 62% of downloads, according to data analysis firm Sensor Tower:

In fact, Sensor Tower came to the conclusion for the first quarter of 2016 on how Facebook has a dominant role. And its leading position not only in the US but worldwide. The study indicates that WhatsApp was the most downloaded in the world (more than 125 million downloads), followed by Facebook Messenger, Facebook and Instagram.

It is clear, therefore, that Mark Zuckerberg has no competition. Not even Google is, if necessary, a direct rival. In any case, it would be Snapchat. The popular application of external messaging has already surpassed Twitter in number of users and its growth continues.

On the other hand, the application market is marked by only two operating systems: iOS and Android…Or what is the same: Apple and Google. Both, according to the report, numbers of downloads grew over the first quarter last year. Separately, the App Store has grown by 13% while the Play Store has grown by 6.7%.

While it is true that the market for application downloads continues to grow, it’s doing it slowly. And besides, it is dominated by large companies. Where are the small developers?

“The rise of mobile applications began in July 2008, when Apple introduced the App Store. Now it is over, says Recode after echoing another study: last May, 15 of the best application “small” publishers saw their downloads go down an average of 20% in the US, according to research by Nomura, which is based on data provided by SensorTower.

However, this slow growth makes Uber and Snapchat take the impact in the opposite way and make the number of downloads considerably higher compared to 2015:

WhatsApp begins to retire from the old Android smartphones

Terminals based on Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 versions will no longer be compatible with this popular application

Software upgrades are necessary in order to better performance and as a mechanism for correcting technical errors that may pose a potential vulnerability exploited by cybercriminals. But also pose outrun devices that do not meet the requirements. In a further cleaning, the popular instant messaging application WhastApp will no longer serve some older versions of the Android operating system.

These will be Android 2.1 Eclair and Android 2.2 Froyo, which are the standard software on some models launched in 2010 as the HTC Desire. The smartphones will not use the application, as can be seen on the official WhatsApp page. “Unfortunately, WhatsApp will stop supporting your mobile from December 31, 2016,” reads the title of this feature and as we can see it will be effective soon.

This “cleansing” joins the announcement from last February in which reported that WhatsApp will no longer be supported later this year by devices based on Symbian, BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone on older terminals. To continue using the service is recommended or upgrade the operating system or if the terminal does not allow it, change it to a more current model.

WhatsApp will have 72 new “emojis”

They will be available from the 21st of June for Android (Google), Apple and Microsoft.

On the 21st of June, WhatsApp users can improve their communication with new emoticons or emojis. Those who are pregnant, for example, no longer have to type it out to let everyone know. Now it will be enough to put in your group of friends the new “emoji” of the pregnant woman. But what if there is a liar in that group of friends? Sure will get called out with Pinocchio’s nose, the other “emoji” you can enjoy this summer.

The black heart, bat, crossing fingers, a handshake or an spanish paella are just some of the innovations to be launched with the new Unicode 9.0. The fan favourite seems to be the expected and highly acclaimed AVOCADO!!

Of course, there will be some action emojis like the “selfie” one.

The Unicode Consortium, the company responsible for implementing all about the “emoji” fever has stated that although the date of approval for the Unicode 9.0 is on the 21ts, it does not mean that users can use the new emoticons the same day. It actually means that from that day Apple, Google and Microsoft are already able to start including these new features for the users to start enjoying.

It was late 2015 when the candidates were announced to be launched this month. Then, it was known that the “selfie”, the pregnant woman or the (late night) kebab, which is also included, could have their own representations.
